Majestic antique late 1910s floral metallic gold lamé and liquid silk Rococo style ballgown ~ think of the incredibly ornamental and theatrical stylings of Marie Antoinette. Rococo styling, also known as 'late baroque' are dramatic pieces of art. This gown epitomizes this style from the luxurious lamé fabric, the ornate silk ribbon flowers with gold metallic trim and the wonderful draping. Delicate floral embroidered net lace creates the bell sleeves, trims the neckline and is layered on top of the liquid gold silk at the hem. The bodice is actually made up of two pieces with the V'd basque waist being a separate 'vest' type piece that attaches under the left underarm with small hook and eye closures and goes up and over the shoulders. The bell sleeves are part of the under dress.
The skirt is amazing featuring the most dramatic upswept draping, especially on the backside. The front is open at the center showcasing the liquid gold silk under skirt adorned with breathtaking multi-color silk ribbon flowers with net lace trimming the hem.
The under dress has eye/hook closures down the front center with snaps enclosing the top of the gold silk skirt. An inner grosgrain waistband is labeled "Thurn Paris New York". The over bodice 'vest' has boning at the seams and two round covered weights on the back V with 3 on the frontside.
Truly a magnificent gown that can be worn or displayed for the art that is it!
Please note: I have stuffed the front and back side gathers with tissue to show off the voluminous draping in the photos. I believe this gown would have been worn with a bustle or panniers of some sort to enhance the draping.
