Antique 1890s 1900s Velvet Walking Suit | Victorian Edwardian Merlot Velvet Jacket Skirt Set with Black Silk Trim & Ornamental Appliqué

Exquisite antique late 1890s to early 1900s walking suit made of sumptuous deep merlot velvet! The fitted jacket is beautifully tailored with a nipped waist and shaped peplum, showcasing striking design work in both texture and tone. Down the center front runs a panel of soft cream felted wool, inset with graphic black rectangular notches that are each outlined in cream soutache braid. The jacket is further adorned with coiled black cord appliqués and black silk trim with floral appliqué framing the cuffs, collar, and faux pocket flaps. Structured puffed sleeves taper slightly towards the wrists, and the back features flattering seaming and a small ornamental back tab that emphasizes the sculpted hourglass shape of the era. The jacket is fully lined in satin, and a hand-stitched “N” is initialed on the interior right panel. The matching floor-length skirt drapes in generous panels of merlot velvet from a fitted waistband, falling in graceful fullness for that characteristic late-Victorian walking silhouette. The skirt closes with double hook/eyes at the waistband and 5 hook/eyes down the center back skirt.
