Outstanding late 1910s, believed to be circa 1918, antique linen side saddle Equestrian riding suit / riding habit! Such a rare acquisition - this is the first side saddle riding habit I've gotten my hands on and it's in impeccable condition. While side saddle habits were starting to go out of favor for the younger population who preferred breeches or 'gasp' riding a stride if they dared, older women of high wealth would not have risked riding a stride at this time.
The following advertisement, linked below, published March 24, 1918 for Bonwit Teller's 'Code of Etiquette in Riding Togs' shows the asking price of side saddle habits between $39.50 and $75.50: https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/service/ndnp/dlc/batch_dlc_brown_ver01/data/sn83030214/00206532245/1918032401/0485.pdf
This late 19teens linen riding habit consists of a close fitting, tailored and elongated linen jacket and a linen side saddle 'apron' skirt. The jacket has a notched winged collar, diagonal curved left bust pocket, close fitting long sleeves with three button accents at the back hems, three button down front closures, two diagonal cut front pockets with button closures and flattering seam-work with slightly flared hem. No lining, the jacket does have a nape tag labeled "Bonwit Teller & Co. Fifth Avenue New York".
The side saddle linen 'apron' skirt has two hook/eyes at left side waistband and button closures extending partially down upper left side waist that also conceal an interior pocket here. The front right side has a notched opening with a stitched closure hole. The skirt then fastens around the right side to back where it buttons into place. The shortened nature of the left side, I assume is to be less restrictive in terms of movement for the wearer. There are two elastic stirrups at interior of skirt that I assume your legs would go into. There is also an additional loop closure near interior hem, an additional interior button near other side of hem and a button attached to a long elastic like cord. The skirt has two 'hanger' tags labeled "Bonwit Teller & Co. Fifth Avenue New York".
