Exquisite antique late 1880s Victorian bustle gown in striking burgundy silk along with tambour lace fashioned into ornate floral designs. This Victorian dress is made up of 3 pieces: a Victorian bustle pad, skirt and bodice. I believe this gown was intended as either a promenade dress or reception dress.

The bodice is outstanding and heavily trimmed in intricate floral tambour lace which extends up and around the entire neckline with scalloped bust sides which reveal the smocked and gathered burgundy silk center. Four connected deep carmine red silk ribbon bows accent the back left shoulder with one larger ribbon bow accenting the back right side. The lace covered 2/3 length sleeves are trimmed in scalloped needlerun net. The back hem of bodice extends down a little further than front with a slight 'tail' protrusion. A long deep carmine red silk ribbon winds around the waist - most likely a portion of this ribbon was fashioned into bows at one point to keep inline with the shoulder bows. Fully lined with glazed cotton, the bodice has four covered bones which are located at the side seams and back seam adjacent to side seams. The bodice closes up the left hand side bodice with 17 hook/eye closures.

The sweeping double tiered floor length bustle skirt features gorgeous tiered knife pleating down the left hand side skirt as well as around the first tier hem. Two tiers of box pleating trim the under skirt from the center sides around back. The skirt is fully lined with polished cotton and there is also an elasticized bustle strap that extends across the back sides. Underneath the first skirt tier, glazed cotton lines the pleated section and opposite side skirt. It does has a hidden shortened straight under hem which is also lined with glazed cotton and has a hem protector. The skirt closes center back with one button. *PLEASE READ: the skirt has been partially reconstructed as there was a significant missing chunk of fabric approx. 15.5"x28" on the backside below the gathered cotton section. I found an authentic Victorian ribbed silk skirt that matched the burgundy silk as close as possible. My tailor utilized the salveagable section of this skirt basically creating a second tier and then hand stitched this on the backside to the original silk that was remaining on the skirt when I found it. The last collage shows where some of this section was hand stitched. I do believe silk would have covered the gathered cotton section at center back, however, I did not want my tailor to re-create something without the original example to go by. I can also send more images of the interior skirt inside out as well as solo pics of where the material is hand sewn on the backside.*

The bustle pad has 5 rolled pleats down the back - I found a similar image that stated 'mohair bustle'. There is corset lacing on the front sides and two laces that tie around the front waistline. This one has a combination of horsehair in it.

Truly a wonderful Victorian bustle dress set - for display or wear!
